Low phase noise hybrid silicon mode-locked lasers
In this paper, we review recent results on hybrid silicon mode-locked lasers with a focus on low phase noise optical pulse generation. Taking a high level design approach to lowering phase noise, we show the need for long on-chip optical delay lines for mode-locked lasers to reach and overcome material limits. Key results include demonstration of the longest (cavity length 9 cm) integrated on-c...
متن کاملPhase-locked soliton pairs in a stretched-pulse fiber laser.
We report the experimental observation of stable pulse pairs with a +/-pi/2 phase difference in a passively mode-locked stretched-pulse fiber ring laser. In our setup the stabilization of interacting subpicosecond pulses is obtained with a large range of pulse separations, namely, from 2.7 to 10 ps, without the need for external control.
متن کاملSoliton stability conditions in actively mode- locked inhomogeneously broadened lasers
We examine the conditions for soliton stability in actively mode-locked inhomogeneously broadened lasers. Numerical simulation shows that in the small negative group-velocity dispersion (GVD) region, excessive gain filtering prevents the generation of a single stable soliton pulse and that in the large negative GVD region, the free-running spectral components destabilize the soliton pulse as a ...
متن کاملDispersion management in a harmonically mode-locked fiber soliton laser.
Harmonically mode-locked Er-fiber soliton lasers have become a reliable source of high-repetition-rate picosecond pulses in high-speed communications and photonic analog-to-digital conversion systems because of their low-noise, dropout-free operation. We have fabricated such a laser with a strongly dispersion-managed cavity and modeled its operation, and we have found that dispersion management...
متن کاملModelling colliding-pulse mode-locked semiconductor lasers
A discussion of three topics in the eld of non linear optics is presented We begin with the Colliding Pulse Mode locked CPM Quantum Well QW laser A large signal model consisting of a wave propagation equation for the electrical eld and a rate equation model for the material response is derived The wave propagation equation of the electrical eld is derived from Maxwell s equations in the slowly ...
